A RETIRED French teacher from Transport Secretary Alistair Darling’s
old school is facing criminal charges over sex abuse allegations dating
back more than 40 years.
Guy Anthony Ray-Hills, 77, was charged by Lothian and Borders Police
over accusation made by two former Loretto School pupils last year.
A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
The alleged sex offences happened when the ex-pupils were aged 11 and
15 between 1958 and 1965 at Scotland’s oldest independent school. They
were made to police last year after film director Don Boyd, accused
Ray-Hills of abusing him while he was at the school in an interview.
Although Boyd made no complaint to police, two former pupils contacted
them after his claims were published, claiming Ray-Hills had molested
them. Loretto, in Musselburgh, East Lothian, is Scotland’s oldest
independent boarding school.
Its former pupils including transport secretary Alistair Darling,
former Chancellor of the Exchequer Norman Lamont and MSP Fergus Ewing.
The allegation last year and police investigation rocked the school
just weeks after another sex abuse scandal broke at the distinguished
Tomb Raider star Iain Glen claimed he was sexually abused there in the
Mr Glen, who attended the fee-paying Academy, said: “There was abuse of
a minor but significant kind.”
